How much does the PSS Vocal Booth cost to build? Following the instructions provided in chapter 5 of the PSS Vocal Booth Plan ‘Where to find materials’ a complete booth including 4kg per square metre of loaded vinyl, 50mm convoluted acoustic lining and full ventilation system can be built for around *US$850. How does the PSS Vocal Booth compare to $3000 plus commercially available units? The PSS Vocal booth has been specifically designed for recording vocals in the project and home studio. The PSS Vocal Booth does not claim to give the type of complete “dead room” isolation of a $3000 unit. The PSS booth will give an absolute minimum of -39dB of isolation starting with 50mm acoustic foam installed. With loaded vinyl starting at 4kg installed the isolating capabilities of the booth can go up to a maximum of over -51dB @ 1kHz. The PSS Vocal booth is ideal for recording in medium noise level areas. The booth will not however block out rumble and noise from trucks if you are on a main road with heavy traffic. For this you will need to relocate the recording area or invest in a specialised booth. In this heavy noise situation even a full ”dead room” booth will not guarantee total isolation as noise levels can often exceed 90dB, only sheer mass will fully isolate this level of noise. An example of this is (as one plan owner stated), “the PSS Booth has provided a silent, acoustically favourable area in a room where we have several computer fans, distant traffic and sometimes a medium sized wall air conditioner going full blast”.
